About Us

Gazi University was opened with the name of "Secondary Teacher School and Training Institute" by the instructions of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1926. Its name was changed to "Gazi Secondary Teacher School and Training Institute" in 1929, then it was renamed as "Gazi Education Institute" in 1976, and it became "Gazi University" in 1982.

Gazi University, a research university in the center of Ankara, includes the first education institution to train the Republic's pioneering teachers. Since 1926, Gazi University is a respected and pioneering university at a national and international level with its interdisciplinary and qualified research, entrepreneurship, high-level education, and community service.

School levels were arranged as primary and secondary education due to the transition to eight-year compulsory education in the 1997-1998 academic year. Then, due to the studies carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of National Education (MNE/MEB) and the Council of Higher Education (CHE/YÖK), the curriculum was reconstructed with the departments and divisions in education faculties. In this context, The Department of Elementary Education was established during the restructuring in 1998. The education started in the Gazi Education Faculty Department of Elementary Education in the 1998-1999 academic year. Until the Council of Higher Education's decision dated 28.02.2017, teachers were trained in the divisions such as Preschool Education, Primary Education, Science Education, Mathematics Education, and Social Studies Education under the Department of Elementary Education.

With the Council of Higher Education's decision dated 28.02.2017, the names of departments and divisions in the new education faculties were rearranged. Based on this decision, the Department of Elementary Education was closed, and the Department of Basic Education was established following the new template sent to the universities.

The function of the Department of Basic Education is to raise experienced and well-equipped teachers, who adopt social and universal values, who are constructive, creative, open to innovations, productive, problem-solver, flexible and capable of responding to the needs of the age, for pre-school education institutions and primary schools.

The Department of Basic Education is one of the most crowded departments of Gazi Education Faculty with its qualified academic staff and number of students. The applications of science lessons are carried out in modern student laboratories. The computer lessons and applications for all department students are given in computer laboratories with sufficient equipment. Courses on teacher education practices are conducted in primary schools and pre-school institutions affiliated to the Ministry of National Education under the guidance of experienced lecturers of our department.

Since its establishment, graduate education activities continue in our department. Students of the Academic Staff Training Program (ASTP/ÖYP) and research assistants of other universities continue to attend these graduate programs under the 35th article of the Higher Education Law.
